Keep Your Home Running This Winter

We’re in the middle of a brisk winter, and the chilly weather will keep us indoors for a while longer. While you’re spending more time at home, you can brighten up your living space with some timely house care.  Go over this January checklist to clean and refresh your home.

Organization and Upkeep

You don’t have to wait until springtime to get started on your housecleaning. Trying to clean up your whole home can seem like a daunting task if you do too much at once, so divide the chores by day and by category. On Day One, get your laundry in order or clean up your kitchen. On the next day, focus on tools, toys, or other items that tend to be strewn throughout. You can also go room-by-room to compartmentalize your tasks. Also, keep winter-specific precautions in mind, like salting your driveway for ice and dripping your faucets to avoid frozen pipes.

Out with the Old

Take a look into your pantry and clear out each shelf for items that have expired. While the shelves are bare, wipe them all down as well. When you place multiples of any item back on the shelves, arrange them by expiration date so that the goods that will last the longest are toward the back, and those that will expire first are ready to be used next. Once the pantry is taken care of, cool off and do the same thing with your fridge and freezer.

Weed out Your Wardrobe

Our closets can often become catch-all storage spaces, but many of the items that we throw into the closet are better off being donated to a local charity or thrift store, or thrown out altogether if they’re truly worn out. Explore your closet to see if there are any old shoes, random odds and ends, or clothing that you know deep down that you aren’t going to use anymore. If you come across any apparel and can’t recall the last time you wore it, that’s a good sign that it won’t actually be missed when you part with it.
