MAZDA Service Tips: How to Jump-Start Your Car Battery

Getting stuck somewhere with a dead battery is never fun, but this is a problem that can be easily dealt with if you’re prepared. Just keep your jumper cables handy and follow these tips from the experts at Med Center Mazda. Then get to our Mazda service center once your car is working again.

What You Need

You need two things to jump your car battery:

• Jumper cables
• Another car with a working battery

Jumping Your Battery

Now you need to get the cars in position so that you can reach both batteries with the same set of jumper cables. Park them nose-to-nose and pop the hoods. Follow these steps:

• Make sure both cars are turned off
• Locate the battery terminals
• Attach a red clamp from the cables to the dead battery’s positive terminal
• Attach the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery
• Take the black clamp from the same side and attach it to the working battery’s negative terminal
• Attach the other black clamp to an unpainted metal part of the car with the dead battery
• Once cables are attached, start the engine on the working car
• After a few minutes, try starting the dead car to see if it works

If the dead car doesn’t start, give the working car a bit more time to run. Eventually, the car with the dead battery should be able to start up. Then remove the clamps in this order:

• Disconnect the negative clamp from the jumped car
• Remove the negative clamp from the booster car
• Remove the positive clamp from the booster car
• Take the positive clamp off the jumped car

Keep your car running for at least 15 minutes to ensure your battery keeps its charge. Turning it off right away can undo your hard work!
