The History and Meaning of the MAZDA Logo

The Mazda logo is one of the most iconic on the market – and it has one of the longest histories, as well. Tracing back to the beginning of the 20th century, it tells the story of a car company that has evolved, grown, and thrived through decades and around the world. Learn about the history for yourself at Med Center Mazda.
Early MAZDA Logo History
The first corporate logo associated with the Mazda brand was introduced in 1936. It could be found on the three-wheel trucks produced by the company at the time, and was a version of the automaker’s name written in an elegant print. After that, it became a series of stacked “M”s with long lines coming out from each side, and then changed to an M in a circle, with the lines extending both upward and downward.
That logo lasted until 1975, before the brand went in another direction with the look of hollow diamond in a circle. This logo was crafted to represent the sun and the flame, symbolic of the brand’s passion. Later on, this icon incorporated a more flame-like hollow figure in the circle, a reference to the rotary engine for which Mazda became so famous.
Recent History
Following the introduction of the sun and flame design, Mazda worked to move away from the similarity to the existing Renault logo. By 1997, Mazda had adopted the M-shaped wings logo, which is what you’ll see on models today. This design, which is supposed to look as though it’s flying into the future, stands for continuous improvement and growth. You’ll see that mindset reflected in every new Mazda model.
