The History of the MAZDA Miata
Since its introduction in 1989, the Mazda Miata, also known as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, has captivated drivers with its pure driving joy and iconic convertible design. Here at Med Center Mazda, in addition to showing off the new Mazda MX-5 Miata on our showroom floor, we also like to share the history of this legendary roadster.
NA: The Birth of a Legend
The first-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, known as the NA, was first unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show in 1989. It was inspired by classic British roadsters like the Lotus Elan, and it quickly became a sensation with its lightweight design, nimble performance, rear-wheel drive, and budget-friendly price. It was a rare vehicle that was popular among both enthusiasts and casual drivers, proving that fun-to-drive roadsters didn’t have to break the bank.
NB: Evolution and Refinement
Debuting in 1997, the second-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, also known as NB, boasted updated exterior styling, a refreshed interior, and groundbreaking safety features. While it retained the core values of its predecessor, it added modern touches like fixed headlights and a more rigid chassis. There were also special editions like the 10th Anniversary Edition.
NC: Modern Refinement
From 2005 to 2015, the third generation of the Mazda MX-5 Miata was known as the NC. It featured a larger platform, more powerful engine options, and available power-retractable hardtops.
ND: The Current Generation
The current fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, the ND, goes back to basics. It’s lighter and smaller than the NC, hearkening back to the original spirit of the roadster. But it’s also packed with modern technology like the MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment system and i-ACTIVSENSE® safety suite.
