Spend A Relaxing Day At These Local Parks

November 5th, 2018 by

When you live in the South, fall is often the best time of year to enjoy some outdoor recreation. The sweltering heat of summer has finally eased off, but it’s not yet too chilly for our Southern blood. This is an ideal opportunity to get out and about and enjoy some of the best parks in the Birmingham area. Bring the kids, the dogs, or just set out solo for some well-earned solitude in the great outdoors. There are many worthwhile parks to visit, but we’ll point you toward a few that are well worth a share of your precious fall weekend.

Veterans Park

Located at 4800 Valleydale Road in Hoover, Veterans Park spans 82 acres and draws visitors with its playgrounds, beach volleyball courts, pavilions, and 5K cross country trail. There is also a 4-acre lake surrounding the property as well as a 1-acre pond and a walking/running trail. Pavilions can be rented out for various events; call (205) 444-7781 for more information on reserving one. Of course, the heart of this park is the large veterans’ memorial that offers a spot for reflection and paying respects to those honorable men and women who fought for our country.

Oak Mountain State Park

No matter what you’re looking for in the realm of fun, Oak Mountain State Park is the answer. This Pelham standard is your go-to park whenever you want to spend a day outdoors and never get bored. Just a sampling of the staggering array of recreational endeavors you can find here includes geocaching, camping, golfing, archery, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and fishing. There is a demonstration farm and beaches, plus picturesque Peavine Falls. There’s much more to explore, too – Oak Mountain encompasses a whopping 9,940 acres of land, making it one of Alabama’s largest state parks.

Red Mountain Park

Hikers, bikers, adventurers, and dog lovers alike flock to Red Mountain Park for a close-to-home escape into nature. The trail system here comprises 15 miles over diverse terrain. At Remy’s Dog Park, you can bring your furry friends to socialize with other dogs and pet owners in their own designated area: Large dogs, small dogs, and special needs dogs each have their own separate fenced playground. Adventurer lovers can get their thrills with ziplines, treetop rope and cable obstacle courses, and a 75-foot tower for climbing.
